Клайд Грифитс - парень из бедной семьи проповедника с типичным американскими взглядами на жизнь, хочет добиться в жизни всего - положения в обществе и богатства. Он не гнушается любой работы и надеется рано или поздно преуспеть.
Войдя в высшее общество через влюбленную в него представительницу местного бомонда Сондру, он начинает тяготиться другой связью - любовью скромной и милой Роберты. И вот когда заветная цель Клайда уже почти близка, все его карты путает беременность Роберты. Запутавшись в своих желаниях и страшась потерять достигнутое, он решается на убийство.
