A lesson in politeness

Моряк и обезьяны.

Однажды моряк сошел на берег Южной Америки. У него было некоторое количество голубых, шерстяных шапок, которые он хотел продать. По пути в город, который находился в отдалении от побережья, он должен был пройти через лес, полный обезьян.

К полудню, когда солнце было прямо над головой моряка, он решил отдохнуть, так как было очень жарко. Он прилег в тени большого дерева, достал одну шапку из сумки, надел ее на голову и вскоре уснул.

Когда он проснулся, то к своему удивлению, обнаружил, что все шапки пропали. Вскоре он услышал громкий шум, доносящийся из листвы толстых веток над ним, и посмотрел вверх. Он увидел ветки, кишащие обезьянами и каждая имела на своей голове голубую, шерстяную шапку. Обезьяны наблюдали за его действиями и украли шапки, когда он спал. Затем они одели их и не обращали ни малейшего внимания на его крики. Когда моряк понял, что не сможет вернуть шапки, он снял последнюю, что оставалась на его голове, бросил ее на землю и прокричал: «Если вы хотите оставить шапки себе, то забирайте и эту тоже».

Jonathan Swift, the famous English writer and author of “Gulliver's travels” was not very generous. He seldom gave anything to the servants of those who sent him presents. But once he received a lesson from a boy who very often carried him hares, partridges and other game. One day the boy arrived with a heavy basket containing fish, fruits and game. He knocked at the door and the dean right chance opened it himself. “Here, – said the boy gruffly. My master has sent you a basket full of things”. Swift feeling displeased at the boy's rude manner said to him: “Come here, my boy, and I'll teach you how to deliver a message a little more politely. Come, imagine yourself Jonathan Swift and I will be the boy”.

Then taking of f his hat very politely and addressing himself to the boy he said: “Sir, my master sends you little present and begs, you'll do him the honor to accept it”. “Oh, very well, my boy, - replied the boy. Tell your master I'm much obliged to him and here is half a crown for yourself”. Swift laughed heartily and gave the boy a crown for

his wit.
